Fountain Park collected teachers' views about economic security and thriftiness

Monday, March 27, 2006

Fountain Park together with the Finnish Foundation for Share Promotion and the Association of History and Social Studies Teachers carried out a study related to the teaching of economics. The study aimed to collect opinions and views on economic security and thriftiness from teachers, who are responsible for teaching economics.

The study was done because the teaching of economics in Finnish comprehensive schools as well as high schools has been spread out and the level has varied greatly. One of the problems has been that the lack of teacher's personal interest or knowledge on economics has directly influenced the level of teaching.

There were 131 respondents around Finland. There were both highly experienced lectors and recently graduated teachers among the respondents.

The research was done by using Fountain Park's Signals web tool. It enabled a thorough examination of teachers' opinions and views as well as the differences between various views. The themes and words used in the study were undefined. The respondents were given an opportunity to interpret them based on their own conception of the world.

The research consisted of three parts. In the first part, teachers were asked to tell their opinions on how individuals are able to influence their own economic security. Respondents were also asked to explain their answer in more detail.

In the second part, teachers were asked to evaluate issues that increase economic security and evaluate how important they are in relation to the Finnish society.

In the third part, teachers were asked to explain how economic security increases in a long run.

The research shows that, prudent life-style, a steady job and home ownership are the basis of economic security according to the teachers. The research results can be widely used when new curricula and supplementary training for teachers are being designed.
