Finnish National Coalition Party involved citizens to draft its political programme for municipal elections

The National Coalition Party Kokoomus and its think tank involved tens of thousands of people to take part in finding topics for municipal elections.

Party members, NGOs and the general public were invited to take part in the formulation of the programme themes for municipal elections. Arousing interest in the autumn 2008 elections was another aim of the exercise. The project was carried out by using the Fountain Park Virtual Brainstorming method.

"This has exceeded all our expectations. By now over 32 000 visitors have logged in, providing an incredible 15 759 ideas for themes, evaluated 80 819 topics and read 362 694 times ideas by others," says Markku Pyykkölä, director of the think tank.

A nation-wide report is available online. In addition all ideas produced can be viewed online according to municipalities as background variables. The service has been widely noticed in the media as an example of citizen involvement in democracy.
